The only skyscraper in Paris
From the outdoor observation deck of the Montparnasse Tower you are supposed to have the very best view of Paris, by day and by night. The panoramic terrace is situated at a height of 210 m (689 ft) on the roof of the building at the 59th floor. On clear days the view is up to 40 km (25 mi). You will see the Eiffel Tower, the skyline of La Défense and even the airplanes starting and landing at Orly Airport. The endless panorama of the urban landscape and the sheer size of the metropolis is really impressing.
Even though it is not the highest observation deck accessible to the public in Paris, this would be the Eiffel Tower’s upper visitor level at 276 m (906 ft), the Montparnasse Tower is actually the only skyscraper in Paris. From it’s opening in 1973 until 2011 it was even the tallest skyscraper in France. But it’s not very popular. Built as an office tower it is considered to be ugly and out of place. People in Paris say that it has the most beautiful view of the city just because it is the only place from which you can’t see the tower itself.
Apart from the rooftop viewing platform also the whole 56th floor is open for visitors. It is completely surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. Here you have interactive terminals, ultra powerful telescopes, a souvenir shop, a Café and an exhibition about historic Paris. At the same floor you will also find the Restaurant Le Ciel de Paris which is open all day for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner (7h30 to 23h00).
